Buffalo grass is a special type of turf from the North American continent named after the bison that fed upon it. Across its multiple varieties, this grass has several key qualities that make it robust for use on Australian properties.
However, like any grass, it needs certain conditions to thrive.
Buffalo grass can be a great addition to your garden, but you must have a full understanding of the available types and their features and needs before you can have it beside your home.
For your guide to Buffalo grass and how to use it, look no further.
The main ‘blends’ of Buffalo grass are Prestige® Buffalo, Sapphire® Buffalo, and Palmetto® Buffalo.
Each of these does a wonderful job but have special traits that might make it tricky to choose just one type. Palmetto® seems to be the most popular in Australia, being drought-resistant for the summer and maintaining a light colour throughout.
Sapphire® Buffalo grass can keep its vibrancy across the entire year and is finely-textured thanks to its folding leaves.
Sapphire® grows well in the shade, which might be good if your property does not get a lot of sunlight. Prestige® grass provides a deep and dark green that might fit the style of your garden better, and it has a strong level of drought tolerance similar to Palmetto®.
Across these different variations, there are some definite commonalities. The broad leaves of Buffalo grass let it capture more sunlight than most other turfs, which allows it to flourish even in areas with less sunlight.
This is most evident in the Sapphire® grass, but Prestige® and Palmetto® are no slouch in this department.
Similarly, though Palmetto® is best for drought resistance, you will find that the deep roots of the other grasses let them also sustain low-water conditions.
Recovery across the board is also strong – dried-out Buffalo grass will swiftly rejuvenate once watered. Buffalo grass can also mostly maintain its colour no matter the season and can handle foot traffic well.
You must look after your turf in a certain way to get the most out of it. When it comes to mowing, you should make sure you maintain a good height of 25-50mm so that you still get the staple Buffalo benefits.
In the shade, you would do well to increase this to around 70mm so that the long blades can absorb as much light as possible.
You should still water your grass around once a week for the best results. Mowing it every 2 to 3 weeks depending on the growth. You should fertilise a month after installation, but after that, you can keep to twice a year – usually at the start of spring and the start of autumn.
Wide Bay Turf supplies turf to the Fraser Coast, ensuring Australian homes get the best grass in the business.
