The Benefits Of Palmetto Buffalo Turf

Thousands of different grass varieties are available, but only a handful are robust enough to stand up to Australian conditions that include extreme heat and drought.

Once upon a time, Australians had little choice in the matter. They were stuck with whatever seed was available, and the result was weedy, patchy grass that would be almost instantly killed off in a heatwave.

Fortunately, we are spoiled for choice today, and Palmetto Buffalo grass is an ideal choice for Australian conditions. Some of the benefits of this turf include:

  • It has a magnificent colour: You will achieve a striking shade of green, and Palmetto manages to hold its colour in winter better than any other variety of grass.

  • It requires less maintenance: Only Palmetto grass requires less mowing among all buffalo grasses sold in Australia. Palmetto grass thrives on little water and does not require much maintenance and mowing.

  • It is drought-resistant: Due to its deep and fast-establishing roots, the Palmetto Buffalo can withstand harsh drought conditions. The drought resistance of this turf variety also means that it requires less water than other turf varieties in its class.

  • This turf is suitable for people with allergies: Palmetto Buffalo produces fewer grass heads than most other species, making it ideal for those allergic or sensitive to grass spores.

  • Palmetto boasts strong shade tolerance: You will only need a few hours of sunlight a day for this turf variety to thrive.

What Type Of Grass Is Palmetto?

Tropical and subtropical regions are popular for cultivating the Palmetto Buffalo lawn grass.

This grass requires medium to high maintenance, forming thick, carpetlike sod and crowding most weeds out. Few buffalo types of grass are as popular as Palmetto, which thrives in South East Queensland and Australia.

Palmetto is an
ideal choice for home lawns, parks and commercial areas due to its dark green colour, exceptional cold hardiness and exceptional shade tolerance.

Areas That Palmetto Is Better Suited Than Wintergreen

The Palmetto turf is weather resistant and can withstand foot traffic; however, the Wintergreen does not tolerate foot traffic as much.

With its soft leaves,
palmetto grass is the most comfortable type of buffalo grass to walk on, compared with other varieties, including Wintergreen.

Couches provide good self-repairing grass and are very durable in hardwearing areas, but they lack Palmetto's colour and feeling.
